BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) are among the most popular supplements in bodybuilding and endurance sports. Rich in leucine, isoleucine, and valine, they are studied for their role in muscle recovery and fatigue reduction. What does science say about their actual effectiveness?

What are BCAAs?

What are their effects on performance and recovery?

Stimulation of protein synthesis

Leucine is one of the main triggers of the mTOR pathway, which is involved in muscle protein synthesis after exercise [2].

Reduction of fatigue during exercise

BCAAs would limit the entry of tryptophan into the brain, with a possible effect on the sensation of central fatigue [3].

Decrease in muscle soreness (DOMS)

Limitations

BCAAs do not replace a complete protein. Their additional benefit is reduced if total protein intake is already sufficient [5].
